Last Chance Saloon (now Fire Rock Grill)

Columbia, Howard County, Maryland
Part of: Oakland Mills Village Center

Wumpus Cat

BRIEF: History and legend meet in thick woods

SUMMARY: Up in the hills of West Virginia lived an old woman whom the townsfolk feared. Some believed that she was a witch. The townsfolk said that she put hexes on their farms and animals. Those animals would disappear. The old lady lived like a hermit, she stayed inside her house and kept her shades drawn. People said that she could turn herself into a cat which could, when they opened doors to their homes, sneak in unseen and hide. Inside, she would wait for her victims to fall asleep before preying on the animals.

Carlyle House

BRIEF: Civil War planning led to ghosts.

SUMMARY: The Carlyle House was built in 1752 by Scottish merchant John Carlyle for his bride, Sarah Fairfax. She was from Belvoir and was a member of one of the most prestigious families in colonial Virginia. Their home was the center of social and political life in Alexandria. You might recognize the name.

Inn at Mitchell House

BRIEF: British Commander, Sir Peter Parker died and may still inhabit this 18th Century House

SUMMARY: The original part of the house was built in 1743 and an addition was added in 1825. The house has a history that goes back to the War of 1812. The British Warship H.M.S. Menelause under command of Sir Peter Parker came ashore through Kent County. Peter was seriously wounded and taken to the Mitchell House and he died in the kitchen. The Col Phillip Reed Room also known as room #4 has a rocking chair in the room. The employees of the inn have seen this rocking chair rocking back and forth with no one in the chair. One of the owners had a dog that liked to play in that room and he also acted like he was playing with someone. The family's cat would not enter this room. Guests who have sat in the rocking chair have felt something touch their leg. Funny noises can be heard through out the house. The basement gives you a bad feeling. This is a place where slaves were kept in chains.
